Pretty Packaging II: Jill's Inspiration

Pretty packaging is everywhere.  Clothing, food, jewelry and more all come wrapped in colorful designs that attract the eye.  They're also a great source of ideas.  Follow along with us as we show how packaging concepts inspire our artwork.

I love the overall color scheme of this packaging design and the repeated background design.  To mimic this on my card, I used Penny Black background stamp 40-442 Butterfly Charmer.  I stamped it with Vintage Photo Distress Ink and then painted it with Shimmerz Aqua Huez non-shimmering watercolors (Pot-O-Gold, Green with Envy, Red Hot, Cuppa Joe, Blue Me Away).

Once dry, I stamped over the butterfly background with Penny Black stamp, 30-238 Footnotes, randomly inking it with Vintage Photo Distress Ink for an on-purpose imperfect look. 

The packaging design included a circular element for the text and I've done the same for my sentiment.  I've layered two Penny Black Creative Dies to create this look on my card: 51-227 Doily Trio and 51-026 Pinwheel.  I stamped my sentiment with VersaFine Onyx Black Ink using the Penny Black transparent set, 30-353 Words of Kindness.  Twine and a die cut butterfly (Penny Black 51-198 Flourish & Butterflies) add extra dimension to the sentiment design.

When I first saw this design, I was immediately drawn to the bright colors against the white background along with the bold white on black text.  I combined all three colors onto one card by painting my stamped flowers with Shimmerz Aqua Huez (non-shimmering watercolors) in the colors of Hottie Pink, Purplicious, Leapin' Lizard, Sea Weed, Pot-O-Gold, Chesternut, Gray Matter, and Carrots.

To create the dark square "text box" I used black cardstock and layered on the simple die cut "hi."

Pretty Packaging I: Elizabeth's Inspiration

What immediately caught my eye about this packaging 
was the bright burst of color against a white background 
with a black tag. 

Using those visual enticements, I created this card.

A small textured background was die cut using Flower Pop Outs (Penny Black 51-230).  Flowers from Sunshine Flowers (Penny Black 30-357) were stamped on a separate piece of white cardstock in Onyx Black VersaFine and heat embossed with clear powder.  After coloring the flowers with Copics they were fussy cut. 

The flowers along with the sentiment from Happy Snippets (Penny Black 30-358) were attached to the prepared card base with dimensional foam tape.

This is one of those card recipes that I enjoy having in my go-to idea file.  So easy to change the color of the flowers and sentiment to fit many different occasions.

Whether on paper or outside our window... we're celebrating Sunshine and Flowers here in the Studio.

Today my flowers are of the layered variety... and these are the kind that my lack-of-a-green-thumb can't kill! LOL  For both of my projects I've used Penny Black's Creative Die set, 51-207 Layered Flower.  

All die cuts colored with Distress Inks, layered, and then added to a watercolor  and Distress Inked background.  Penny Black Supplies: 51-222 YAY, 51-207 Layered Flower, 51-198 Flourish and Butterflies, 30-341 Fly High: 51-026 Pinwheel

Sunshine and Flowers, 3 of 4: Elizabeth

Whether on paper or outside our window... we're celebrating Sunshine and Flowers here in the Studio.

A mistake gone right!  

Yes, that is correct.  When I first started this tiny mixed media piece everything quickly went from good to bad.  I was just about to start over when I thought I had nothing to lose by continuing to experiment.  As it turns out, it is one of my favorite pieces and a wonderful learning experience.

I soon discovered that all the yucky parts I didn't like which were eventually covered by colorful layers of paint, gesso and watercolor are what gave it such intense vibrancy and depth.

The great structural foundation for all that liquid loveliness is an Inchie Arts Art Square.  I was amazed that after multiple applications of gesso, paper text, matte gel, watercolors, acrylic paint, pastel pencils and a final coat of Krylon Clear Acrylic Coating, the Art Square didn't warp.  The piece looked like a tiny ceramic tile and was easily adhered to the card with double-sided tape.
